Desmond Tutu Files Charges Against Granddaughter Ziyanda Palesa Tutu Tutu

South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his wife have accused their granddaughter Ziyanda Palesa Tutu of property damage.

The retired 83-year-old archbishop, a world-renowned leader in South Africa's anti-apartheid movement in the 1990s, and wife Leah said in a statement Thursday, "We confirm that a criminal charge has been laid and that police are conducting an investigation," BBC News reports.

Ziyanda, 30, appeared to comment on the charges on Twitter on Tuesday, saying: Palesa Tutu @ziyandatutu

Cape Town police confirmed Friday that they are investigating a case of "malicious damage to property," according to the Associated Press. They said Tutu's wife, Leah, had filed the complaint.

"We are naturally distressed and deeply saddened," said a statement from the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation. The foundation "hopes and prays that the family will soon be able to put this incident behind it."
