“The Grim Presence,” as he was known, wasn’t averse to a tipple. At his 1865 vice presidential inauguration, an apparently blotto Johnson demanded whiskey from former Vice President Hannibal Hamlin. Johnson knocked back three shots, then grabbed the Bible from the chief justice and kissed it. He also forgot the names of his cabinet and was heard whispering, “Who is the secretary of the Navy?”
