Filipe Nyusi has been proclaimed by Mozambique’s electoral commission as the country’s new president after polling 57.3 percent of the votes in the general elections held on October 15.Nyusi of the ruling Frelimo party will replace outgoing President Armando Guebuza who has just ended his second five-year term and cannot run again.

http://en.starafrica.com/news/files/2014/10/apa/arton808390.jpgAccording to a statement by the National Election Commission (CNE) on Thursday, the opposition Renamo candidate, Afonso Dhlakma polled 36.61 percent followed by Daviz Simango of the Mozambique Democratic Movement with 6.4 percent.

Frelimo won 144 seats, Renamo 89 and MDM 17 in the country’s 250-member National Assembly.

CNE chairman Abdul Carimo described the poll as credible and called on the losers to use the legal institutions to challenge the outcome.

Renamo had rejected the results, saying the polls were rigged in favour of the Frelimo.
