Amish Friendship Bread Starter and Recipe!

RECIPE - Amish friendship bread is super yummy

Amish friendship bread is super yummy!

It's great to pass starts to the neighbors too!

It is made with a starter that ferments and grows...you add ingredients to it and squish it daily. On day 10, it's ready to mix and split into individual starters and one cup of starter to bake with...give extra starts to friends and then repeat the process.

Step 1: Let's make the Starter!

This is the recipe for the STARTER.

Here's how to make the starter.

Do not use any metal bowls or utensils for the starter. It will sit on your counter fermenting for days. Once you make the starter, just keep it going and you'll never have to make it again!

You will need:
  • 1/4 C Warm Water

  • 3 Tablespoons of dry active yeast

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup milk

Let the warm water and yeast work together for 10 minutes. Then add to the other ingredients.

Mix with glass or plastic utensils.

Once it is all mixed, it's ready to place in a gallon size zipper bag.

Label it with the date. Then set it on the counter and wait!

Step 2: 10 Days for the starter to grow!

Over the next 10 days here's what you will do.

Day 2-Day 5: Just squish and mash the bag...don't open it or anything. Just a minute of squishing.

On Day 6: Open the bag and add 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of flour.

Then zip it shut and squish it until mixed.

Day 7-9: Just squish the bag again.

On day 10: Pour out the contents into a non metal bowl.

Add 1 cup flour, sugar and milk.

Mix it up!

Then add 1 cup scoops into gallon size zipper bags. (I had 5 cups of starter, so it made 4 bags of 1 cup servings...the last cup is to bake with)

Label with the date. (yes, I was one day behind...oh well)

At this point, you can deliver the starters to neighbors or friends with the printable instructions below.

They can make their own...and keep one for yourself to continue!

If this is overwhelming, at day 10 you can FREEZE your bag

and pull it out when you are ready to bake! It's great to keep on hand!

Step 3: Day 10: BAKING DAY!!!

Next let's bake!

At this point, it's fine to mix in a metal dish.

Add 1 cup of starter

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 cup oil

  • ½ cup milk

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla

  • 1½ teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • 2 cups flour

  • 2 small boxes of Vanilla Pudding

  • 1 cup nuts or dried fruit (optional)

Mix it all together to make a cake-batter-like dough!

Next, prep 2 loaf pans or one bundt pan.

Grease the pans and sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar

(1/2 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon)

In a bundt, the bottom of the pan is the top of the bread.

So once you grease and coat the inside,

dump the rest of the cinnamon and sugar inside.

If you are doing loafs, save the rest to sprinkle on the top of the dough.

Then pour in your dough!

Bake it for 1 hour in a 350*F oven.

Step 4: Sweet Pay Day! Eat the Bread!
