The family of an ex-MI6 spook who compiled a 'dirty dossier' on Donald Trump have said they are 'concerned' after he went into hiding.

Christopher Steele fled his home for a secret location yesterday and was reported to be 'terrified for his safety' amid fears of a backlash from Moscow over the memos.

The 35-page dossier compiled by the former intelligence agent contains claims the US President-elect was bugged by Russian spies while in Moscow, where the billionaire was reported to have carried out “perverted sexual acts” in the presidential suite of a hotel.

Father-in-law David Hunt, 79, said he last saw 52-year-old Mr Steele, a former British diplomat to Moscow, at Christmas.

He said: "We’ve just heard the news this morning and we are just a little concerned about it.

"We last spoke to him two weeks ago at our Christmas get together, he was with us just after Christmas. He was fine.

“I’m afraid that’s all I want to say.”

He married Mr Hunt's daughter Laura in 1990 and the couple had three children together before she died in September 2009, following a short illness.

Mr Steele is said to be a highly-respected Russian expert who spent many years in the British intelligence service before setting up his own private business.

Shortly after marrying he moved to Moscow for his first diplomatic posting, while his wife worked there for British Airways.

Within 18 months the Soviet Union had collapsed and Russia's first elected president, Boris Yeltsin, had begun implementing radical changes.

One of the couple's friends recalled in a eulogy after Mrs Steele's death: "On the day Yeltsin stood on the tank to proclaim change I rang Laura up. I asked how she was.

"Characteristically she told me that Chris was fine because he'd been sent on the streets to find out what was going on. What about you I asked? "Fine, she said, and hesitated slightly before saying she was a little concerned about the tank 500 yards away with its large gun pointing at their block of flats." The couple later moved to south London and had their children Matthew, Henry and Georgina between 1996 and 2000.

Mr Steele was then posted to Paris but Mrs Steele became ill and underwent a series of operations. They returned home living in Epsom, Surrey, where she died aged 44.

A neighbour told the Daily Telegraph the spy had asked him to look after his cat while he laid low. Senior British security sources yesterday revealed emergency measures were being taken to make the MI6 veteran safe.

A source said: “Once his name came out the view was that he could be under threat so steps are being taken to protect him and put him in a more secure environment.”

British newspapers and media outlets were being asked not to name him until after 10pm yesterday so he could be made safe.

That means it is possible he was being transported to an emergency safe house - which may be in a different country

The dossier compiled by Mr Steele, who now runs intelligence-gathering firm Orbis Business Intelligence, contains claims Trump was bugged by the Russians to provide information that could be used to blackmail him.

The unverified memos also include reports Trump stayed at the Ritz Carlton Hotel and made prostitutes defile the bed knowing Barack and Michelle Obama had stayed there on a recent trip.

Mr Trump angrily dismissed the claims today claiming “I have a phobia of germs.”

The unverified memos released late Tuesday night also claimed Russian authorities had been cultivating and supporting the billionaire businessman for at least five years, “feeding Mr Trump and his team valuable intelligence on his opponents.

A two-page summary of the allegations were reportedly presented to Mr Trump and Mr Obama last week in meetings with Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, FBI Director James Comey, CIA Director John Brennan, and NSA Director Admiral Mike Rogers.

It claimed he stayed at the Ritz Carlton Hotel and made prostitutes defile the bed knowing Barack and Michelle Obama had stayed there on a recent trip.
