Facebook has launched a marketplace on the social network allowing users to buy and sell things to users in their local area

Facebook is taking on eBay with a new online "marketplace" that lets users buy and sell things to their friends and strangers over the social network. Many people already use Facebook to advertise items they want to sell, and more than 450 million people visit "buy and sell" groups each month, according to Facebook. Now the social network is hoping to formalise the process with a new feature called Marketplace that aims to provide a destination for users to discover, buy and sell items with people in their local area.

"Marketplace makes it easy to find new things you'll love, and find a new home for the things you're ready part with," said Mary Ku, director of product management at Facebook in a blog post. Over the next few days, Facebook users in the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand will see a shop icon appear at the bottom of their Facebook app. Tapping this item will take you through to the Marketplace, where you will see photos of items that people near you have listed for sale.

To find something specific, search at the top and filter your results by location, category or price. You can also browse what's available in a variety of categories such as "Household", "Electronics" and "Apparel". When you find something interesting, tap on the image to see more details from the seller, including a product description, the name and profile photo of the seller, and their general location.

Once you have decided what you want to buy, you can send the seller a direct message from Marketplace to tell them you’re interested and make an offer. From that point on, you and the seller can work out the details in any way you choose. Facebook does not facilitate the payment or delivery of items in Marketplace.

Selling an item is also relatively straightforward. All you need to do is take a photo of your item, or add it from your camera roll, enter a product name, description and price, confirm your location, select a category, and then post. This will allow anyone in your area to find your item and message you if they want to buy it. You can also choose to post to specific buy-and-sell groups at the same time - if it is a collectible item, for example.

Although Facebook Marketplace is only available in four countries to begin with, the company said it would expand to additional countries and make Marketplace available on the desktop version of Facebook in the coming months.
