The American boxer was hospitalised in Florida on Monday and died a short time later, according to reports.

Circumstances surrounding the death of the sports star, real name Kevin Ferguson, remain unclear.

"One of the most popular MMA fighters ever, Kimbo was a charismatic, larger-than-life personality that transcended the sport.

"Outside of the cage he was a friendly, gentle giant and a devoted family man. His loss leaves us all with extremely heavy hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ferguson family and all of Kimbo's friends, fans and teammates."

The MMA fighter in action

The 42-year-old was due to fight James Thompson at the Bellator 158 event in London this Summer and Slice was scheduled to meet reporters on Wednesday at a location London to start promotional work on the fight.

Slice rose to fame through infamous street fights, which were filmed and uploaded to YouTube throughout the early 2000s. He was one of the first real 'superstars' of the platform and his fights have been played millions of times while he has become a household name.

Slice went on to fight professionally and even competed in The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights in 2009 where he lost in his first fight to series winner Roy Nelson.

Slice went on to make his UFC debut against Houston Alexander in the 'Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights finale' and went on to fight one more time in the organisation before moving on to Bellator MMA where he competed to this day.

His cause of death is as yet unknown

His last fight was in February where he fought longtime rival and former compatriot Dhafir "Dada 5000" Harris at Bellator 149.

Ferguson won the fight by knockout in the third round, but was later found to have tested positive for steroids in a fight-night screen and thus the fight result was changed to a no contest.

While his rise to fame in unsanctioned fighting may not to have been to everyone's liking, Slice was a beloved member of his community and the news of his death will be met with great sadness worldwide.

He is survived by six children and longtime girlfriend Antoinette Ray.
