Fast food craze 'could turn women into men because chemicals cause female snails to grow penises'
The US has banned chemicals used in many pizza boxes because they may be harmful to health - but they're still readily available in the UK

Fast food craze: A munchie box filled with food

Toxic munchie boxes could turn women into men, scientists fear.

Yesterday the Daily Record revealed chemicals used in some takeaway packaging have been linked to cancer.

That could be bad news for fans of the fast-food craze, which has been labelled a heart attack in a box because of the calorie-laden contents.

And today a leading scientist has revealed that the chemicals in munchie and pizza boxes can mutate sexual organs in snails.

This has triggered fears it may do the same in humans.

Scottish marine biology expert Dr Mark Hartl also revealed the chemicals in the boxes may cause genetic disruptions in kids too.

The US has banned chemicals used in many pizza boxes because they may be harmful to health.

Hartl, of Heriot-Watt University, said a study had shown similar chemicals called perfluoroalkyls “inhibited an enzyme important in female sexual development”, adding that it caused “a build-up of testosterone in female snails, leading to masculinised females who grew penises”.

Watchdogs Food Standards Scotland said they were aware of the US ban, adding that EU laws covered food packaging.

They said suppliers of paper board need to demonstrate it was safe, adding: “Any pizza boxes used in Scotland must comply.”
